Brief History:

The British took control of the Cape from the Dutch in 1795, and returned it to Dutch control seven years later, only for it to be re-captured again in 1806 due to Dutch alliances with Napoleon.

Many of the Afrikaner (Dutch, German & French) farmers migrated north to escape British political rule and established the Independent Boer Republics (Transvaal and Orange Free State). Politics combined with the discovery of gold and diamonds in these new areas led to the the Boer Wars 1880-1881 & 1899-1902, which ultimately led to the Boer Republics becoming part of the British Empire.

This continued until 1934 when sovereignty was granted, and finally in 1961 the Republic of South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth.
